About the Area

Lying wholly within the county of Cumbria the Lake District National Park attracts visitors from all over the world at all seasons of the year. With sixteen major lakes and numerous mountains, tarns, craggy fells and wooded hills that tumble to the waters edge this is one of the most magnificent areas in Britain . Visitors come to walk, climb, enjoy the many water activities available or simply relax amidst the spectacular scenery.

The quiet, picturesque villages and towns of Cumbria are all worth a visit and in particular do not miss the opportunity to visit one of the most delightful and picturesque villages in Cumbria , Hawkshead, with its beautiful church on the hill, overlooking the village. Here you can find the school attended by the Lakeland poet William Wordsworth from 1778 to 1787, and see the very desk he sat at.

The town of Bowness is only a few minutes walk from Mereside across Cockshot Point. There you will find quaint old pubs, restaurants and teashops, gift shops, churches and of course you can visit the delightful Beatrix Potter exhibition and meet all the wonderful characters from her favourite children's stories. Just a few minutes walk further round the lake will bring you to the steamboat museum, which is a magnificent setting for a unique collection of steam, motor and sailing boats, all in pristine working condition.

Travel a little further and you will come to Brockhole, the National Park Visitor Centre. Alternatively take the Lake steamer from Bowness to Waterhead and then the horse trolley into the town of Ambleside or Lakeside for a steam train ride to Haverthwaite.

Whatever you decide to do we look forward to welcoming you whenever you can take a short break or a longer holiday. Don't forget we are open all year round and each season weaves its own special magic over the Lake and its beautiful surroundings.
